What is a blood moon and how does it happen? I have heard many descriptions, explanations and speculations concerning blood moons. There have been those that think that the moon actually turns to blood; and then there are those that do not even realize it happens. Blood Moons occur when the earth passes between the light of the Sun and the position of the moon which then blocks the light that normally illuminates the moon. The light from the sun passes through the earth’s atmosphere which is mostly made up of nitrogen. The nitrogen then filters out the blues in the light, allowing only reds to come through, which then makes its way to the moon, giving it the red glow and thus the name “Blood Moon”.
